Nelson White’s one-person show “Tukien (Awaken)” at The Rooms in St. John’s, NL.

Artist/painter Nelson White, who was featured in two group shows this past summer at J.K. Contemporary, is being honoured with a one-person show “Tukien (Awaken)” at The Rooms in St. John’s, NL. White, a Mi’kmaq from Flat Bay on the west coast of Newfoundland, creates paintings focused on portraying his indigenous family, friends, community in contemporary life.

The Rooms writes: “Combining bright colours and a Pop art style with traditional motifs, White’s paintings undermine one-dimensional understandings of Mi’kmaq people and their lived realities. His work is particularly resonant in Newfoundland and Labrador, where many reconnect with their Indigenous heritage following years of erasure by colonial entities.”

Congratulations Nelson!

The Rooms, located in St. John’s is Newfoundland and Labrador’s largest museum of arts, heritage and culture. You may see Nelson White’s paintings through April 2, 2023.
